Have you ever been to a ghost town? Bodie is a real California gold-mining ghost town that has been turned into a State Historic Park. It’s just northeast of Yosemite and definitely worth making a little detour to explore for a few hours.

There are only a few buildings left, but since there has been no commercial development and the buildings still contain the owners’ belongings inside, the whole place gives you an eery feeling that time has stood still here. It’s strange to look inside the windows of the wooden homes with their dingy, crooked curtains still hanging  and see the clothes left behind on their hooks, pots and pans on the stoves, and hats hanging by the door, as if the owners might return at any moment…

Here I am with Daisy, outside the schoolhouse. I tried to imagine what it would have been like to be a school teacher there, in those times. Rather grim, I would imagine.

I can’t say that I believe in ghosts, but I would not want to spend the night alone in Bodie, with only the howling  winds and tumbleweeds for company…

Hi! I'm Nuvea. I live in Southern California with my husband, three horses, four dogs and one cat, but can frequently be found restoring our tiny stone cottage and olive grove in Portugal.
