A short, conveniently located hike that that takes you to a flying-saucer like house overlooking Palm Springs?
The first part of the trail takes you past a trailer park (off to the left) which feels a little odd as you are walking right past people’s homes, but then it opens up as you climb higher. You can get quite close to Bob Hope’s house and Steve McQueen’s is just down the way…
Not to mention that you can connect from this short hike to much longer hikes, allowing to customize a hike for your particular level of fitness or depending on how much time you have. I only had about an hour on this day, so I turned back when I got to the house. It was still worth it for the views.
The home was built by John Lautner in 1979 and recently went on the market for $45 million. Just in case you were wondering what houses that look like spaceships cost these days.
Some of the beautiful patina on the rocks as you climb up.
The Araby Trail (actual name) access is on Rimrock/Southridge Road, off Highway 111. There is parking on a small dirt lot just off to the right and the trailhead is across the street, on the left.
***This hike is listed as dog-friendly in a local hiking guide, and we hiked with the dogs, but on our way back we did see a sign that said “no dogs” so we are a little confused. I will update this information as soon as I get clarification, but in the meantime, if you do go on a hike here I recommend that you check with the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center, as the status might change depending on lambing season for Peninsular Bighorn Sheep.
As a result, Daisy could only give this hike 4 out of 5 wags.
